Department of Philosophy: People: Core Faculty: Aidan Lyon

Aidan Lyon (PhD Australian National University) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy. He works mainly in Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Probability, Formal Epistemology and Philosophy of Mathematics, but is also interested in topics in Philosophy of Physics and Biology. His recent work has been on understanding the notion of objective probability in various scientific theories, with a focus on Classical Statistical Mechanics and Evolutionary Theory. He also works on issues surrounding judgement aggregation/consensus formation and biosecurity intelligence gathering and analysis. This work is done in collaboration with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), and is supported by the Australian Centre of Excellence for Risk Analysis (ACERA). He has also worked –– at the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), University of Queensland –– on developing decision theory tools to solve problems in sustainable development in the minerals industry. Prior to joining the Department, Aidan was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Sydney Centre for the Foundations of Science, University of Sydney; and in the Philosophy Program at the Australian National University.
