About the Department

The Department consists of 20 faculty members, two staff members, some 50 graduate students, and about 150 undergraduate philosophy majors. The faculty have a wide range of interests throughout contemporary analytic philosophy, with special strengths in the areas of cognitive science, ethics and value theory, logic and language, and the philosophy of science.

About the University

The University of Maryland is the major public research university in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., and is one of the top 20 public universities in the U.S. It is the flagship campus of the University of Maryland system. There is a strong commitment to research, and to quality education at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Location

The campus is located in College Park, Maryland, a suburb of Washington DC, just a few miles north of the National Mall and within the DC beltway. The area has many internationally recognized museums, monuments, libraries, theatres, and performing arts organizations, and the campus lies in close proximity to a number of major research institutions in the humanities and sciences.

The Washington region is one of the most verdant metropolitan centers in the U.S., with large areas devoted to wildlife refuges and scenic parks. Surrounding the Washington region are nearby state and national parks, as well as the waterways of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, from the Shenandoah and Appalachian Mountains to the Cheseapeake Bay and Assateague seashores.
